THE RING SHE WAS SLAPPED FOR / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN WHO COLLECTED A PAYMENT.

Evelyn’s father, Samuel Cross, had managed hotel maintenance and led the employee trust.

Andrew said Samuel died in a highway accident unrelated to the company.

Evelyn answered, “Then why did your legal department pay for his funeral before police identified him?”

The board ordered an independent audit.

Records showed Samuel had discovered that Sterling Grand charged service fees to guests while withholding those same funds from staff. The missing money financed Andrew’s private jet, Victoria’s jewelry line and the gala surrounding them.

Victoria called the workers ungrateful.

“You had jobs because this family kept the doors open.”

Evelyn looked around at the uniformed staff.

“The doors stayed open because they worked behind them.”

Margaret admitted she gave Evelyn the ring after finding Samuel’s sealed files, but she had waited until the gala to reveal them.

Evelyn’s voice sharpened.

“You chose a dramatic room while families lost pensions in quiet apartments.”

Margaret accepted the rebuke.
