THE RING SHE WAS SLAPPED FOR / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - THE FATHER SHE HAD ALREADY BURIED.

Security records led investigators to a private Sterling residence outside Richmond.

Samuel Cross was alive.

He entered the ballroom using a cane, older and ashamed. Evelyn did not embrace him.

“You let me bury you.”

Samuel said Andrew threatened to accuse Evelyn’s mother of embezzlement and remove Evelyn from college unless he disappeared.

“I thought silence would keep you safe.”

“It kept me obedient,” Evelyn answered.

Samuel revealed he had continued gathering evidence from inside a Sterling-owned senior residence. Margaret knew where he was but feared Andrew would close the worker trust if she moved too soon.

A banquet captain named Rosa Delgado spoke from the staff line.

“Powerful people always need one more year before justice becomes convenient.”

Samuel surrendered every record and gave up any automatic claim to leadership.

Then Victoria noticed the pink ring’s inner band.

It carried a second name: LILLIAN VALE.

Lillian had been Victoria’s mother, a seamstress she claimed died poor.

Margaret said quietly, “Your mother was not poor. Your husband stole her shares too.”
