Chapter 1 - THE CHILD THEY ACCUSED.

Ruby Dawson sat on the marble floor beneath a hundred crystal lights, her pink dress stained with champagne and her small hands shaking beside a scatter of silver spoons.
“You stole from my table,” Vivian Carrington shouted, pointing at her as if she were something dirty.
Around them, senators, donors, and hotel owners watched without moving.
Ruby’s mother washed linens in the basement of the hotel, and everyone in the ballroom knew it.
That made Vivian’s accusation easy to believe.
“I didn’t take anything,” Ruby cried.
Vivian smiled coldly.
“Children like you always say that when they are caught.”
Grant Ashford, owner of the hotel, crossed the ballroom and knelt beside Ruby.
He ignored Vivian’s order to call security and studied the spoons one by one.
Then he found the only one that did not belong to the hotel.
A tiny crest had been engraved beneath its handle.

Grant’s face lost all color.
“Ruby,” he whispered, “where did you get my family’s missing silver?”
