Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH.
The photograph had been taken behind the same hotel seventeen years earlier.
Caroline stood in a waitress uniform, visibly pregnant, while Vivian gripped her arm.
On the back, someone had written: She offered me money to disappear.
Vivian snatched for it, but Grant moved it beyond her reach.
“This proves nothing,” she said.
“It proves you knew her,” Grant replied.
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“She came begging after your father cut her off. I helped her leave with dignity.”
Ruby looked up through swollen eyes.
“My mom said you told her people like my dad should never enter the Ashford family.”
A few guests lowered their champagne glasses.
Others stared at Ruby’s worn shoes as though poverty itself were evidence against her.
Vivian ordered hotel security to remove the child and her mother from the gala.
Grant stood.
“No one touches them.”
Then the head of security approached with a tablet.
He had reviewed the ballroom cameras.

On the screen, Vivian was placing them beside the girl.
