Three weeks later, DNA testing confirmed that Ruby was Caroline Ashford’s daughter and Grant’s niece.
The trust waiver was declared fraudulent.
Vivian and Charles faced charges for fraud, obstruction, and theft, while the foundation board removed every official who had helped bury Caroline’s claim.
At the hearing, Vivian arrived in designer clothes and called Ruby an opportunist.
Ruby wore the same pearl necklace her mother had left her.
She did not cry.
“My mother cleaned tables in rooms where people said she did not belong,” Ruby told the judge.
“Elena cleaned hotel rooms so I could eat. Neither woman was beneath you.”
The judge restored Ruby’s legal name and froze the assets taken from her trust.
Outside, reporters crowded around Grant, expecting him to announce that Ruby would move into his mansion.
Instead, Ruby took Elena’s hand.
“She is my mother too,” she said.
Grant agreed that no inheritance would separate them.
