The recording showed Vivian crossing behind Ruby during the applause, opening a folded napkin, and letting the spoons slide onto the marble.

A moment later, she shouted that the girl was a thief.

The guests who had watched Ruby cry now avoided her eyes.

Vivian did not apologize.

“She brought stolen family property into this ballroom,” she said.

“I created a situation that forced the truth into the open.”

Ruby’s mother, Elena, rushed in from the service corridor wearing her housekeeping uniform.

She wrapped both arms around Ruby.

Vivian looked at the uniform and smiled with open contempt.

“You see, Grant? This is what your family name will become.”

Elena’s face burned, but she did not step back.

“I raised Ruby after Caroline died because no Ashford ever came for her.”

Grant looked wounded.

“We were told Caroline had left the country.”

“She tried to come home,” Elena replied.

“Her letters were returned unopened.”
