Chapter 5 - THE SIGNATURE THAT STOLE A LIFE.

Inside the envelope was a copy of Caroline’s inheritance waiver.

It stated that she had rejected the Ashford trust, surrendered all future claims, and demanded no contact with her family.

Grant recognized his father’s signature.

He also recognized Caroline’s.

But Elena pointed to the date.

Caroline had supposedly signed the waiver in Boston on the same morning Ruby was born in a county hospital three hundred miles away.

A hospital bracelet and discharge record were folded behind the document.

Vivian called them fabricated.

Grant called the family attorney from the ballroom.

The attorney arrived with an archived file and admitted that Vivian had delivered the waiver herself.

“She said Caroline was ashamed of the child,” he confessed.

Ruby stared at the wealthy strangers who had believed Vivian before believing her.

“Would they have listened if my dress cost more?” she asked.

No one answered.

Then the attorney opened Caroline’s original trust.

If she had a living child, that child inherited half the Ashford foundation.

Vivian had controlled that half for sixteen years.
