At the Ashford Foundation’s annual gala, Lily Hart was treated like part of the furniture.
Wealthy guests snapped their fingers at her, criticized her uniform, and spoke about her as though a waitress could not understand English.
When Lily placed an entrée before Evelyn Ashford, the family’s silver-haired matriarch, her cuff slipped back.
A small red heart-shaped birthmark appeared on her right wrist.
Evelyn’s face changed instantly.
She seized Lily’s wrist, pulled an antique silver locket from her gown, and whispered, “My daughter had the same mark.”
