Madison accused Lily of stealing the pendant from the Ashford estate.
The accusation spread through the ballroom faster than the truth.
Guests who had ignored Lily moments earlier now stared as though poverty itself were evidence of guilt.
Grant demanded that hotel security search her locker and handbag.
Lily stood still while strangers discussed her honesty, her upbringing, and her “kind of people.”
She did not cry until the manager opened her worn purse in front of the entire table.
Inside was a sealed letter from the woman who had raised her.
The letter said the pendant had been wrapped around Lily’s wrist on the night she was left at a church clinic.
