Chapter 8 - THE BOX BENEATH THE MARBLE.
Staff lifted the marked tile while Elena and Adelaide watched from a safe distance. Beneath it lay a metal box containing wage receipts, pension books and letters from employees promised permanent housing.
The records covered hotels, farms and care facilities in four states.
One letter came from Mr. Hale’s wife, Ruth. She had been declared incompetent after questioning missing pension money and died in a Mercer-owned care home.
Mr. Hale read her final line aloud.
“They say confusion makes my house theirs.”
Richard called the papers outdated.
Adelaide answered, “Injustice does not expire because paper yellows.”
Federal investigators froze the properties. Tenant and worker representatives formed an emergency council, preventing the estate from returning automatically to Adrian or Elena.
Vivian laughed.
“You would hand a dynasty to janitors and cooks?”
Elena replied, “We are returning decisions to the people whose labor paid for them.”
Then the box revealed a newer document transferring Hawthorne Mansion to Elena before her confinement.
