Sienna learned the account had been created when she was a child. Evelyn Carter used it to receive secret payments from Ashford Development in exchange for steering poor landowners toward predatory loans.
Sienna had never accessed the money, but her future had been financed by families pushed from their homes.
She refused to claim innocence as ownership.
“Return every dollar. My ignorance does not make their loss smaller.”
The Ashford board was replaced by worker, tenant and community representatives. Old settlements were reopened, housing debts canceled and injured families compensated. Garrick and Miriam lost control of the company and mansion. Helen testified about her own prosecutorial failure without seeking immunity.
The sling, the erased recording and the unsigned divorce papers were preserved in a public accountability archive.
A plaque read:
“THEY CALLED HER OBEDIENT BECAUSE FEAR WAS THE ONLY AGREEMENT THEY COULD ENFORCE.”
At the first community board meeting, Thomas Carter’s recorder activated one final time.
A woman’s voice said, “Helen thinks Thomas died investigating the Ashfords.”
