Helen remembered the case. Ashford attorneys claimed the fire resulted from contractor negligence and offered families immediate payment.
She had approved the settlement to avoid years of litigation.
Malik’s voice remained controlled.
“My mother’s life became a practical compromise because your office had limited time.”
Helen did not defend herself.
“I believed speed was mercy. I never checked who benefited from silence.”
She asked Fletcher to refer her conduct for independent review and surrendered any role that could influence the investigation.
Sienna took her hand.
“Accountability does not stop being real because the person is family.”
The board opened every old settlement, including those Helen had approved. Former laborers testified that unsafe conditions were known long before the fire.
Miriam called them opportunists.
Rosa answered, “The wealthy call delayed truth greed because they already spent the money.”
Then Malik produced Thomas Carter’s missing audio recorder.
