Victor looked at the ring on his finger, then at the enlarged recording.
“I never touched that decanter.”
His younger son, Julian, entered from the adjoining library wearing an identical ring. Camille admitted ordering a duplicate for a family portrait, but claimed it had been lost months earlier.
Elena sealed the wine and called emergency services. Laboratory staff identified the pale object as a powerful sedative used at Briarwood House, the private elder-care residence funded by the Hawthorne Foundation.
Victor had donated millions to Briarwood while publicly praising its care for retired teachers, maids and factory workers.
Elena removed a folded medication list from her apron.
“My mother lived there. They gave her the same drug before she signed away her home.”
Camille called the accusation extortion.
Elena answered, “Poor families call it theft when medicine makes consent disappear.”
Victor demanded Briarwood’s records.
