Chapter 7 - THE DEAD HOUSEKEEPER’S ACCOUNT.
A cybersecurity specialist traced the cloned phone to the mansion’s staff network.
The account belonged to housekeeper Ruth Ellis, who had died the previous winter after eviction from a Hawthorne cottage.
Victor remembered approving a policy that removed retired staff from company housing once they entered care.
Elena placed Ruth’s rejection letter beside his glass.
“She cleaned this room for forty years. Your policy gave her thirty days.”
Victor did not claim ignorance as innocence.
“I signed it. Reopen every eviction and review my authority.”
Daniel called that surrender reckless.
A senior butler answered, “Reckless was making old workers homeless while their photographs stayed in your anniversary books.”
Ruth’s account had been used after her death through executive credentials from Daniel’s office.
Daniel blamed his assistant.
Then security found Ruth’s old phone inside Camille’s locked dressing-room drawer.
Camille looked at Julian.
“You planted that.”
Julian replied, “You were the only one who knew the code.”
