Chapter 5 - THE BADGE BENEATH THE EMPTY PLATE.

Daniel arrived under escort and claimed he found Elena’s badge outside Briarwood weeks earlier.
Elena said it disappeared the night she was fired.
The badge log showed someone used it to enter the compounding laboratory, copy Rosa’s records and remove sedatives. Daniel argued that Elena had created the entire scene to punish the family.
Victor looked at her. “Did you enter that lab?”
“Yes,” Elena said. “I copied evidence. I did not put anything in your wine.”
She surrendered her photographs and accepted investigation for unauthorized access.
Camille smirked until Elena opened Rosa’s pension ledger.
Briarwood had deducted “care fees” from low-income residents while billing Medicare and their families for the same services. The extra money financed Hawthorne Biologics’ failed research division and Camille’s charity galas.
Camille went pale. “I was told sponsors covered those events.”
Elena replied, “They used residents’ medicine money, then put your face on the invitation.”
Victor froze all family accounts.

Then Rosa’s final withdrawal appeared.
The money had paid for Elena’s college tuition.
