Chapter 6 - THE TREATMENT BOUGHT WITH STOLEN MONEY.
Nora’s mother, Evelyn Shaw, had worked as Thomas Vale’s housekeeper and later became treasurer of the employee medical fund. Together they documented double billing and coerced transfers.
Victoria dismissed Evelyn as a domestic worker who misunderstood finance.
Rosa replied, “She understood every dollar because workers earned each one.”
Thomas and Evelyn hid original deeds in the wine cellar. After Thomas died, Victoria pressured Evelyn to reveal them by denying coverage for Lily’s heart surgery.
Nora admitted accepting one hundred thousand dollars and signing a confidentiality agreement.
“I bought my daughter treatment and left other families without evidence.”
Lily began to cry. Nora did not ask the child to comfort her.
Rosa demanded the settlement be placed into restitution. Nora agreed.
A forensic accountant then traced the payment.
It had not come from Victoria’s money. It came from the employee medical fund Evelyn managed.
Victoria had withheld Lily’s lawful benefit, then returned it as the price of Nora’s silence.
