Chapter 7 - THE GRANDMOTHER WHO STAYED DEAD.

Evelyn Shaw appeared by secure video from a rural senior residence. She was alive, alert and furious.
Victoria had told Nora her mother died after leaving the state. Evelyn had been told Nora accepted money and abandoned the investigation.
“You divided us with the same lie,” Nora said.
Evelyn admitted remaining hidden after escaping a Vale facility. She wanted enough evidence to destroy the entire network before returning.
Nora’s hurt did not soften.
“You protected the case while Lily grew up believing her grandmother was dead.”
Evelyn accepted independent review of her silence.
One of Adrian’s aides, Marcus, then surrendered an audio file. Years earlier, he heard Nora crying behind the cellar door but obeyed orders because Victoria threatened his brother’s immigration sponsorship.
“I brought water,” he said. “I did not open the door.”
Rosa answered, “Secret kindness kept you feeling decent. Public courage might have freed her.”
The audio captured Victoria discussing Nora’s confinement with another man.
