Chapter 3 - THE MAID WHO OWNED THE LAND.
Emma regained consciousness in the estate clinic two hours later.
Daniel was not allowed inside.
Robert sat beside her while Claire complained in the hallway that servants were being permitted to question the family.
Emma explained that Grace had not merely cleaned the Whitmore estate.
Thirty-five years earlier, she had loaned Robert the money that saved his first construction project.
Unable to repay her, Robert had given Grace a twenty-percent interest in the land beneath the mansion and the company’s original hotel.
Robert remembered signing the agreement, but Claire had told him Grace later sold her share.
“She never sold it,” Emma said.
“She hid the original deed because someone forged her signature.”
Daniel discovered the truth after marrying Emma.
For years, he called her lucky, reminded her that she had entered the mansion through the service door, and pressured her to sign documents she was never allowed to read.
That night, Emma had finally brought the deed to Robert.
Claire struck her across the face.
Daniel grabbed the folder.
Then everything went dark.
Robert asked why Emma had stayed silent.
