Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE BUILT TO STEAL.
The attorney arrived before dawn carrying a leather briefcase and the confidence of a man who had protected wealthy clients for decades.
He produced a document claiming Emma surrendered every interest connected to Grace’s estate when she married Daniel.
Emma recognized the final page but not the pages attached to it.
Daniel had asked her to sign what he called a routine health-insurance form while she was recovering from surgery.
The signature was real.
The agreement was not.
Claire smiled at the staff gathered near the doorway.
“This is what happens when people without education sign papers they cannot understand.”
Emma’s humiliation turned the room silent.
Robert opened the company email archive.
A message from Daniel to the attorney appeared: Once Emma signs, the maid’s claim disappears permanently.
Another message instructed Claire to keep Robert away from the sunroom that evening.
The attorney began packing his briefcase.
Forged documents and stolen property were no longer family gossip.
They were evidence.
Then the estate accountant entered carrying Grace’s old payroll file.
