Chapter 1 - The Woman Behind the Chain

Marcus Hale arrived at Ashford Estate expecting to deliver court papers, not rescue a woman from a chained shed.

The white Virginia mansion behind him was filled with donors attending Ryan Ashford’s charity luncheon, while an elderly voice trembled behind the rusty wooden door.

Marcus set his black document case beside the latch, pulled the chain free and found Helen Ashford curled on muddy straw beneath a rough blanket, holding a metal bowl with both hands.

Her gray dress was worn, her hair was tangled and her lips moved as if she had forgotten whether anyone would answer.

“Ma’am, can you hear me?” Marcus asked before lifting her carefully into the daylight.

Ryan and his mother, Diane, crossed the lawn with well-dressed guests behind them, not alarmed by Helen’s condition but furious that the shed had been opened.

Ryan blocked Marcus and ordered him to put her back, calling the elderly woman a disturbed trespasser who had wandered onto private property.

Diane looked at Marcus’s inexpensive shoes and accused him of staging the rescue to create a lawsuit against a prominent family.

The guests accepted her version almost instantly.

A wealthy owner’s accusation sounded respectable, while an exhausted woman wrapped in a dirty blanket appeared guilty simply because she looked poor.

Marcus seated Helen safely, covered her legs and opened his case.

“These records prove you locked her inside,” he said, pressing the legal file against Ryan’s chest.

Ryan smirked until Helen lifted her head toward the mansion.

Her voice was weak, but every guest heard it.

“This is not his property,” she said.

“This house belongs to me.”

Then Diane reached into her purse and produced a certified death certificate declaring that Helen Ashford had died eight months earlier.
