Chapter 3 - Dead on Paper
Dr. Cole walked across the lawn with the calm authority of a man accustomed to being believed before he spoke.
He described Helen’s supposed final illness in clinical language and said grief had made Marcus vulnerable to manipulation.
Diane praised the doctor’s reputation, reminding the guests that he chaired a university hospital and treated senators, judges and corporate families.
Helen answered by naming the scar beneath his left cuff, the one he received when he dropped a glass during the examination he claimed happened after her death.
The doctor’s face tightened.
She explained that Cole had visited her while she was sedated, pressed her thumb onto legal forms and warned that no court would trust an old woman over a respected physician.
The guests shifted uneasily, yet none apologized for doubting her.
Marcus showed bank transfers from the Ashford Foundation to Cole’s private consulting company, each payment made days before Helen’s competency evaluations.
Ryan called the transfers ordinary medical fees.
Marcus then produced photographs of Helen inside an unlicensed basement room at the care facility, where residents were kept away from phones and visitors.
Diane accused him of exploiting elderly patients for publicity because his legal clinic depended on donations.
The insult was carefully aimed.
Marcus had grown up in a trailer park outside Richmond, attended law school on public scholarships and still represented clients who could not afford private counsel.
To Diane, his work for poor people proved he lacked prestige; to the guests, her contempt sounded like reasonable concern.
Helen raised the metal bowl she had carried from the shed.
Scratched into its underside were the names of seven other residents who had vanished after challenging wealthy guardians.
The final name belonged to Marcus’s late mother, Teresa Hale.
Marcus had been told she died in a county hospital after a fall.
Helen looked at him with grief.
“Your mother was in that facility with me,” she said.

Before Marcus could ask another question, the county sheriff arrived and announced that he had a warrant for Marcus’s arrest.
