Chapter 2 - The Owner They Declared Dead
The guests stared at Helen as though the document mattered more than the living woman sitting before them.
Diane announced that the real Helen Ashford had died peacefully in a private care facility and that Marcus had brought an impostor to the estate.
Ryan said the woman was a former kitchen worker who had become obsessed with the family after losing her job.
Helen tried to stand, but weakness forced her back into the chair.
She named every room inside the mansion, described a hidden crack beneath the east staircase and recited the combination to a safe Ryan claimed had never existed.
Still, several donors whispered that servants often learned private details by listening at doors.
Marcus opened the first section of his file and displayed the original deed, tax records and a handwritten revocable trust proving Helen remained the estate’s legal owner.
Diane dismissed them as outdated papers prepared before Helen became incompetent.
She reminded everyone that Ryan had attended elite schools, managed the family foundation and funded scholarships for rural students.
No one mentioned that Helen had built the foundation by selling farmland inherited from her own mother.
No one mentioned that Ryan had never earned a dollar outside companies carrying his last name.
Helen explained that she had opposed Ryan’s plan to destroy the workers’ cottages and replace them with a luxury golf resort.
Three days later, a physician declared her incapable of managing her affairs.
Within a week, Diane moved her to a private facility and told the staff she had no surviving family who wished to visit.
Marcus revealed that Helen had escaped the facility two months earlier and secretly contacted his elder-rights clinic.
Before she could testify, she disappeared again.
Ryan pointed toward the shed and claimed Marcus had hidden her there himself.
Then Marcus turned over the death certificate.
