Chapter 6 - The Will They Bought
Diane held the will above the legal file and declared that Helen had always intended Ryan to inherit everything.
The document described him as her devoted grandson and named Diane as executor, guardian and trustee.
Ryan asked the guests whether a loving grandmother would truly leave her estate to servants and strangers.
The question revealed how thoroughly he believed wealth traveled through blood, even when care did not.
Helen said Ryan had visited her only when he needed signatures.
The people who bathed her, cooked for her and maintained the land knew more about her final years than the grandson demanding ownership.
Marcus examined the will and found it had been signed inside Dr. Cole’s hospital, witnessed by two Ashford Foundation employees and notarized by Judge Voss.
Every person validating Helen’s wishes had received money or favors from Ryan.
Diane accused Marcus of resenting successful families because his own father had died bankrupt.
Marcus answered that his father died after being blacklisted by the Ashfords for organizing estate workers.
The lawn became silent.
Helen confessed that decades earlier, her husband ordered the blacklist and she lacked the courage to stop him.
Teresa Hale, Marcus’s mother, later discovered the same records and helped Helen prepare a new trust transferring the estate to workers and elder-abuse survivors.
That was why Teresa had been placed in the private facility.
Marcus looked at Helen with anger as well as grief.
She had known part of the truth about his mother and waited until her own property was threatened to reveal it.
Helen did not ask for forgiveness.
She said privilege had allowed her silence to feel less cruel than it was.
Marcus opened a sealed envelope Teresa had mailed to his clinic before her death.
Inside was Helen’s newer will, witnessed by residents of the facility and recorded on video.
It left Ryan a modest education trust but transferred the mansion, farmland and foundation to an employee-controlled public benefit organization.
Ryan shouted that the witnesses were poor, medicated and legally unreliable.
Helen looked directly at the guests.
“That is what they say about everyone who cannot afford to be believed.”
Then Marcus played the will’s video.
