Chapter 4 - The Lawyer They Put in Handcuffs
Sheriff Wade crossed the lawn with two deputies while Ryan’s guests stepped aside as though law enforcement had arrived to restore the natural order.
The warrant accused Marcus of trespassing, abducting a vulnerable adult and attempting to extort the Ashford family.
Ryan insisted that Marcus be handcuffed immediately because poor people became dangerous when embarrassed.
Diane did not correct him.
Marcus held out his wrists but demanded that the deputies read the emergency federal order inside his document case.
Sheriff Wade refused and said a public-interest lawyer did not get to command county officers on private land.
The guests watched Marcus being searched with the same fascinated silence they had shown when Helen was carried from the shed.
No one searched Ryan.
No one questioned why a chain had been fastened to the outside of a door containing a frail woman.
Helen shouted that Wade was the man who transported her from the care facility.
The sheriff called her confused.
Marcus asked one deputy to inspect the inside pocket of the legal file.
There she found a federal injunction prohibiting Ryan, Diane, Dr. Cole and county officials from moving or detaining Helen until a guardianship review was completed.
The order had been signed forty-eight hours earlier.
Sheriff Wade claimed he had never received it, but an electronic delivery receipt showed his office had opened the document three times.
The deputy removed Marcus’s handcuffs.
For the first time, the wealthy guests began recording Ryan instead of Marcus.
Helen then revealed that Sheriff Wade had personally chained the shed that morning after Diane promised him control of the estate’s hunting lease.
Wade denied it until Marcus opened the black case’s padded lower compartment.
A small camera had been transmitting from the document clasp since Marcus reached the property.
The livestream showed Wade’s patrol vehicle leaving the shed less than ten minutes before the rescue.
Wade reached for the case, but the deputy stepped between them.
Then Ryan smiled and said the recording no longer mattered.

The clock on the mansion tower began striking twelve.
