Chapter 8 - The Mother They Turned Into Evidence
Marcus stared at his mother’s device number while Ryan laughed for the first time since the livestream began.
He told the guests that Teresa had betrayed Helen and that Marcus’s entire case had been built on the work of a criminal.
The accusation reopened every class prejudice the evidence had briefly silenced.
A donor whispered that domestic workers always protected one another until money appeared.
Another suggested Marcus had inherited his mother’s dishonesty.
Helen gripped the arms of the chair and ordered them to stop using Teresa’s poverty as proof of guilt.
She explained that residents at the care facility had no private phones.
Staff stored their devices in a locked office controlled by Dr. Cole.
Teresa’s identification could have been used by anyone with access to the cabinet.
Marcus searched the facility’s maintenance logs and found that Diane visited the office on the night the trust was revoked.
Diane claimed she had gone to deliver blankets.
Helen pointed to the rough beige blanket around her shoulders.
It carried the Ashford Foundation logo, but its inventory tag belonged to the same facility.
Diane had not donated blankets.
She had used charity deliveries to enter restricted rooms without signing the visitor log.
Dr. Cole attempted to leave the estate, but the deputy stopped him after discovering active warrants for falsifying medical records.
Cole offered to testify in exchange for immunity.
He admitted Diane paid him to sedate Helen and upload the revocation through Teresa’s device.
He also admitted Teresa discovered the plan and tried to contact Marcus.
Before she could leave, Sheriff Wade returned her to a locked room.
Cole insisted he did not cause her death.
Marcus asked who did.
The doctor looked toward Ryan.
Ryan’s arrogance vanished.
Cole said Teresa had hidden a second ledger containing every payment in the scheme.
Ryan went to the facility that night to retrieve it.
He came back without the ledger and told staff Teresa had suffered a fatal fall.
Marcus stepped toward him but did not touch him.
Ryan backed away and claimed there were no witnesses.
