Chapter 1 - THE PUSH THEY CALLED AN ACCIDENT.

“You sent the evidence to the police!”
Evelyn Vale’s shout cut through the two-story foyer as Maya backed toward the upper railing.
“Everyone deserves to know what you did.”
Evelyn shoved her shoulder once.
Maya’s hip struck the low railing, and the marble floor vanished beneath her.
“Adam!”
Adam was already moving. He jumped across the inside curve of the balcony, caught Maya around her back and waist, then turned during the descent and landed on one knee against the thick foyer rug. The impact shook him, but he kept her head protected.
“Maya, can you hear me?”
She gripped his sleeve.
“She pushed me.”
Above them, Evelyn stared down with manufactured shock.
“It was an accident.”
One of the two house employees stepped forward.
“No. We both saw you shove her.”
Adam covered Maya with his jacket and looked up.
“Do not move. The police already have the recording.”
Red and blue light spread across the windows.
Evelyn’s face tightened, but she did not run.
Instead, she smiled.
“You think the police are coming for me?”
The front doors opened.

The lead detective entered, looked directly at Maya, and said:
“Ms. Reyes, you are under investigation for stealing six million dollars from the Vale Family Trust.”
