Chapter 5 - THE VISIT ADAM NEVER TOLD HER ABOUT.
Adam admitted visiting the residence.
He had received an anonymous message claiming a former employee possessed information about his late father.
When he arrived, the facility director introduced the patient as “Robert Reed,” a confused man with no surviving family.
Adam did not recognize Rafael because years of medication and confinement had changed his appearance.
Maya’s voice trembled.
“You stood in the same room as my father.”
“I did not know.”
“You knew enough to keep the visit secret.”
Adam lowered his eyes.
The patient had handed him a folded note, but Evelyn took it before he could read it. She told Adam the man was delusional and trying to extort the family.
Once again, the accusation had worked because the target was poor, sick, and powerless.
Evelyn spoke with contempt.
“Rafael threatened this entire family over a bookkeeping misunderstanding.”
Maya stepped toward her.
“You imprisoned him because he understood the books perfectly.”
The police searched Evelyn’s study and found medical payments, forged guardianship orders, and reports describing Rafael as paranoid whenever he mentioned employee ownership.
The same physician had signed commitment papers for seven former Vale workers.
All seven had challenged missing pensions or unsafe housing.
Then a detective recovered the note Rafael had given Adam.
It contained only one sentence:
“Ask Evelyn what happened the night Arthur fell from the library stairs.”
