Lucia Reyes had worked as Arthur’s financial secretary.
She discovered the employee trust transfers before Rafael did and helped Arthur prepare the revised amendment.
Evelyn offered her money to destroy the documents.
Lucia refused.
Soon afterward, she was accused of stealing jewelry during a Vale charity gala.
The family did not press charges.
They did something more effective.
They destroyed her reputation among every hotel, estate, and law office in the region.
Lucia disappeared after receiving threats against Maya.
Rafael believed she had fled to protect their daughter.
Evelyn finally admitted she knew Lucia’s location.
“She took a settlement and agreed never to contact the family.”
Maya’s voice became cold.
“My mother did not agree to abandon me. You made the cost of returning my safety.”
Police found the settlement agreement.
It required Lucia to live under a new identity and surrender all parental contact. If she violated it, Evelyn could seize the Reyes home and terminate Rafael’s employment.
Lucia had signed under coercion.
Her forwarding address belonged to a women’s residence funded by the Vale Foundation.
Nora recognized the institution.
It was the same organization Evelyn praised at galas for “giving poor women discipline.”
Investigators contacted the residence.
Lucia had left years earlier.
But she left behind a locked metal case for Maya.
Inside were photographs, trust records, and a recent portrait of Lucia standing beside Adam.
The date was from their wedding day.
