Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN ADAM CALLED A STRANGER.

Adam recognized Lucia as the quiet woman who approached him outside the church after the wedding.
She had asked whether he would protect Maya if the Vale family turned against her.
Adam believed she was a former employee.
He answered that Maya was safe because she was now part of his family.
Lucia’s response had confused him then.
“That is what frightens me.”
She tried to hand him an envelope, but Evelyn’s security aide removed her before Maya saw them.
Adam never investigated.
Maya looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“You had another chance to ask a question.”
“I failed again.”
“You did not fail because you lacked information. You failed because the woman looked poor enough to dismiss.”
Adam accepted the truth.
He resigned from Vale Holdings and surrendered his voting shares to the employee cooperative. He did not ask the decision to count as forgiveness.
Lucia’s metal case proved Evelyn, Charles, and several board members had stolen housing funds, forged medical orders, and displaced staff families for luxury development projects.
Federal investigators entered the case.
Evelyn was arrested for assault, fraud, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering.
At the hearing, she called Maya an opportunist stealing a family legacy.
Maya placed the original deed on the table.
“My father maintained your home. My mother protected its trust. Your family only supplied the arrogance.”
The judge denied bail.
Then Lucia’s final video began playing.
She said:

“If Maya is watching this, Evelyn has already exposed the smaller crime.”
Behind her was a wall covered with children’s photographs.
