Evelyn arrived with the merger board and called Maya an opportunist exploiting a private mistake.
Maya held Lucas closer.
“Your son-in-law signed his name before I ever asked for money.”
Evelyn corrected her coldly. “Men like Ethan have obligations beyond emotion.”
Claire answered, “And women like Maya are expected to carry every consequence quietly.”
The board learned Evelyn had selected Claire’s wedding date to occur before Lucas’s trust hearing. The marriage would present Ethan as part of a stable wealthy household while attorneys argued Maya’s rotating shifts and small apartment made her unfit.
A gate cleaner named Denise Carter spoke from the doorway.
“I work nights because your flights leave before dawn. That schedule does not make my children less safe.”
The board froze the merger and ordered an independent audit.
Then auditors found Maya had received two hundred thousand dollars from a Lawson settlement account after Lucas’s birth.
Ethan smiled for the first time.
