Chapter 4 - THE ATTORNEY WHO KNEW THE SIGNATURES

Arthur did not run.

That made it worse.

He simply stood there.

Calm.

Old.

Unreadable.

Daniel looked at him.

“You had access to our signatures.”

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.”

No denial.

No outrage.

Just truth.

Noah stepped closer.

“Did you forge them?”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

Victoria exhaled.

Too quickly.

Daniel saw it.

That was the fourth crack.

He turned toward her.

“Why are you relieved?”

She said nothing.

Arthur opened his briefcase.

Inside were copies of Richard’s old company records.

Trust documents.

Medical directives.

Succession papers.

And one sealed blue folder.

He placed it on the desk.

“I did not forge anything.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Then why did Richard name you?”

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“Because I knew who did.”

Silence.

Victoria went pale.

Noah’s jaw tightened.

“Who?”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

Then at the blue folder.

“Richard’s death certificate was filed before anyone independently identified him.”

Daniel went still.

Arthur continued.

“The identification came from jewelry.”

The silver ring.

The same ring found in the casket.

Victoria whispered,

“That was standard procedure.”

Arthur looked at her.

“No.”

His voice stayed calm.

“It was convenient procedure.”

The room changed.

He opened the blue folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard entering Room 417.

Another photograph.

Victoria outside the same hotel.

Then a third.

A man walking behind her.

Daniel saw the face.

And stopped breathing.

“No.”

Noah looked at him.

“Who is he?”

Daniel could barely answer.

“My father.”

The room went silent.

Edward Hale.

Founder of the company.

Family patriarch.

A man everyone believed had been too sick to attend the funeral.

Arthur looked at Noah.

“Your grandfather was at this hotel the night your father disappeared.”

Victoria stepped back.

Too late.

Noah stared at her.

“You knew.”

She said nothing.

Then Arthur pulled out one final document.

A private family trust amendment.

If Richard died, control did not pass to Victoria.

It passed to Noah.

But only if Noah remained legally competent and inside the family household.

Noah’s face changed.

Daniel understood first.

“They needed him discredited too.”

Arthur nodded.

Then he opened another file.

Behavioral instability review — Noah Hale.

Already written.

Already dated.

Before Richard disappeared.

And at the bottom was a planned guardianship recommendation.

Guardian:

Victoria Cross.

Noah stared at her.

“You were going to take my father’s company through me.”

Victoria said nothing.

That silence was answer enough.

Then Arthur looked at Daniel.

“There’s more.”

No one wanted more.

That was exactly why everyone listened.

“Richard never died in Room 417.”

Noah stopped breathing.

Arthur continued.

May you like

“He left that hotel alive.”

And someone had followed him.
