Chapter 6 - THE NURSE WHO KEPT THE ORIGINAL CHART
The nurse’s name was Helen Ross.
She was seventy-one now.
Retired.
Still alive.
And still afraid.
When Daniel called, she answered one question.
“Is Noah safe?”
Noah froze.
Daniel said,
“Yes.”
Helen replied,
“Then I’ll come.”
Victoria whispered,
“No.”
Too late.
Helen arrived carrying an old white envelope.
She looked at Noah first.
Then cried.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Noah did not move.
“What happened to him?”
Helen sat down.
“No one died at that clinic that night.”
The room changed.
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why was there a death certificate?”
Helen opened the envelope.
“Because the certificate was prepared before Richard arrived.”
Silence.
Arthur looked at the timestamp.
10:36 p.m.
Richard entered at 12:14 a.m.
The death paperwork came first.
The disappearance came later.
Noah looked at Victoria.
“You wrote the ending before he got there.”
Victoria said nothing.
Helen continued.
“Richard was conscious.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“He kept asking for his son.”
That broke him.
Not loudly.
Worse.
He looked down.
Helen continued.
“He said, ‘Tell Noah I didn’t leave him.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Arthur looked away.
Then Helen pulled out the original medical chart.
Richard refused sedation.
Refused guardianship.
Refused resignation.
Refused transfer of shares.
Four refusals.
All crossed out in the copy later given to the family.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“You erased every no.”
She lifted her chin.
“I did what was necessary.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Justification.
Noah stared at her.
“My father saying no was inconvenient.”
Victoria said nothing.
Helen turned the final page.
Then stopped.
Daniel saw her face.
“What?”
She looked at Noah.
“There was one visitor Richard asked to see.”
Noah’s voice trembled.
“Who?”
Helen answered.
“Daniel.”
The room froze.
Daniel went pale.
“I was never called.”
Helen nodded.
“I know.”
She pulled out the call log.
Three calls were placed to Daniel.
All redirected.
To Edward Hale.
Daniel stared at his father’s name.
The room changed.
His father had not only followed Richard.
He had intercepted the calls too.
Then Helen said one final thing.
“Richard left me a recording.”
Noah stopped breathing.
“What did he say?”
Helen looked at Victoria.
Then toward the door.
“He said if he disappeared, the person to fear was not Victoria.”
Victoria went still.
Daniel’s face hardened.
Helen continued.
“He said she was only following instructions.”
Noah whispered,
“Whose?”

The door behind them opened.
And Edward Hale walked in.
