Chapter 5 - THE CAR THAT FOLLOWED HIM

The hotel garage camera had been deleted.
Almost.
One backup survived.
Richard left Room 417 at 11:42 p.m.
He crossed the garage.
Entered a black sedan.
Then drove away.
Thirty seconds later, another car followed.
Edward Hale’s car.
Noah stared at the screen.
“My grandfather followed him.”
Daniel said nothing.
His face had gone white.
Victoria lifted her chin.
“That proves nothing.”
Noah looked at her.
“You really like that sentence.”
The room went silent.
For the first time, the boy did not look broken.
He looked certain.
Arthur continued the footage.
Richard’s sedan stopped outside a private medical clinic.
Daniel frowned.
“What clinic?”
Arthur answered.
“Hale Executive Wellness.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
His father owned it.
Victoria looked away.
Wrong move.
That was the fifth crack.
Noah looked at her.
“What happened there?”
Arthur opened another document.
A private medical intake form.
Richard Hale.
Admitted 12:14 a.m.
Reason:
Acute emotional crisis.
Daniel stared at it.
“That’s not possible.”
Arthur nodded.
“I know.”
“Richard hated that clinic.”
“I know.”
“He would never check himself in.”
Arthur looked at the signature.
“He didn’t.”
Forgery.
Again.
Noah’s voice dropped.
“Who authorized admission?”
Arthur turned the page.
Victoria Cross.
The room froze.
Victoria said,
“I was his fiancée.”
Noah looked at her.
“You told everyone you were his widow.”
Silence.
There it was.
The title she had wanted.
The role she had already started playing.
Arthur continued.
Richard remained inside the clinic for six hours.
Then the record ended.
No discharge.
No transfer.
No death.
Just nothing.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“What happened at 6:14 a.m.?”
She said nothing.
Arthur answered.
“A private elevator opened.”
One person left through the underground exit.
Wearing Richard’s coat.
But the face was hidden.
Then Noah noticed something.
“Play it again.”
Arthur did.
The person carried Richard’s leather briefcase in the left hand.
Noah shook his head.
“My dad was right-handed.”
The room changed.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Someone had left wearing Richard’s clothes.
Carrying Richard’s case.
Pretending to be him.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Too late.
Then Arthur found one more camera.
A service hallway.
At 6:19 a.m., Victoria walked out.
Beside her was Edward Hale.
Daniel’s father.
Noah’s grandfather.
And between them was a wheelchair.
Empty.
Noah stared at it.
“Where was my dad?”
No one answered.
Then a nurse appeared in the footage.
She looked directly toward the security camera.
And held up a note.
May you like
Three words.
HE IS ALIVE.
