Chapter 7 - THE GRANDFATHER WHO CAME TO STOP THE RECORDING

Edward Hale did not look sick.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

For weeks, the family had been told he was too weak to attend meetings.

Too ill to answer calls.

Too fragile to attend his own son’s funeral.

Yet now he stood in the doorway.

Perfect suit.

Straight posture.

Cold eyes.

Noah looked at him.

“You were there.”

Edward said nothing.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You followed Richard from the hotel.”

Silence.

Helen held up the recording.

Edward’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

That was the sixth crack.

Noah saw it.

“Play it.”

Edward finally spoke.

“That recording is private.”

Noah looked at him.

“My father disappeared.”

His voice shook.

“You gave him a funeral without him.”

Silence.

“Nothing is private anymore.”

Helen pressed play.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“If Noah hears this, I need him to know one thing.”

Noah closed his eyes.

“I did not leave you.”

The room went still.

Richard continued.

“My father gave me a choice.”

Daniel looked at Edward.

The recording continued.

“Sign away the company.”

“Give Victoria guardian control.”

“Or disappear.”

Noah opened his eyes.

Edward said,

“This is absurd.”

The recording answered him.

Richard’s voice:

“He thinks legacy belongs to whoever obeys him.”

Daniel stared at his father.

Edward’s face hardened.

Richard continued.

“But Noah is my son.”

“And the company belongs to him after me.”

Noah started crying.

Not because of the money.

Because his father had still been fighting for him.

Then Richard said,

“Victoria helped them.”

She closed her eyes.

“But she was promised something.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Richard answered.

“A new identity.”

The room froze.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Noah looked at her.

“Why would you need one?”

No answer.

Then Helen opened another envelope.

Inside was an old birth certificate.

Victoria Cross was not her birth name.

She had once been Victoria Vale.

Arthur went pale.

Daniel noticed.

“You know that name.”

Arthur whispered,

“Yes.”

Victoria Vale was Richard’s half-sister.

Noah’s aunt.

Edward’s secret daughter.

The room died.

Daniel stared at his father.

“You used your own daughter to marry your son?”

Edward snapped,

“There was no marriage.”

Too late.

The truth was already out.

Victoria had not wanted Richard romantically.

She had been placed beside him.

A false fiancée.

A witness.

A future guardian.

A person Edward believed he could control.

Noah looked at her.

“You knew he was your brother?”

Victoria started crying.

“No.”

Edward closed his eyes.

That was enough.

Victoria turned toward him.

“You told me my mother lied about who my father was.”

Silence.

She looked at Richard’s recording.

Then at Edward.

“You used me too.”

No one answered.

That was the seventh crack.

Then Helen played the final part of Richard’s message.

“My father has one weakness.”

Edward went still.

“The original trust.”

Arthur looked up.

Richard continued.

“He thinks I destroyed it.”

A pause.

“I didn’t.”

Noah stopped breathing.

“It is hidden inside the one place he would never open.”

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at the broken funeral casket.

Noah did too.

And suddenly everyone understood.

May you like

The casket had never been empty.

It had been hiding something.
