Chapter 2 - THE CONFESSION WRITTEN BEFORE THE CRIME.

Adrian claimed his credentials had been copied, but Eleanor had already prepared a police statement naming Claire as the thief.
Claire stared at the page.
“You wrote my confession before spraying me.”
Eleanor called it a protective family procedure.
“Women from backgrounds like yours become unpredictable around wealth.”
Claire’s mother had cleaned Vale hotels for twenty-seven years. Claire had paid for law school by working nights in those same kitchens.
“My mother entered through service doors,” Claire said. “That did not make your stolen money cleaner.”
A detective inspected the diamond key. It belonged to a safe-deposit box, not the mansion vault.
Inside the box were payroll ledgers showing that housekeepers, drivers and cooks had surrendered wages when Vale Hospitality nearly collapsed.
In return, they were promised ownership shares.
The final trustee was Claire’s late mother, Maria Santos.
