Chapter 9 - THE DEAD MAN WHO MARRIED HER AT SEVENTEEN.
Claire’s false marriage certificate had been used to move Maria’s worker shares into the Vale family trust years before Claire and Adrian met.
Eleanor had built the entire future marriage around correcting a transfer that was already fraudulent.
Adrian’s father, Charles Vale, had supposedly died ten years earlier. His signature appeared on documents filed last month.
Claire asked Eleanor whether he was alive.
For the first time, the matriarch looked afraid.
Charles had created the worker-share scheme, then secretly preserved the ledgers after his own family tried to destroy them. He faked his death and used false marriages to hide assets from Eleanor.
Maria rejected the excuse before he could appear.
“Stealing ownership to protect it is still stealing ownership.”
The workers voted to place every hidden asset under court control.
Then Charles entered the hearing carrying the original marriage registry.
He looked at Claire and said:
“You were not brought into this family to become Adrian’s wife.”
