Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER THEY LOCKED BEHIND EXPENSIVE CURTAINS.
Dr. Thomas Santos arrived with attorneys and called Maria’s condition severe.
Claire placed the worker ledgers before him.
“You diagnosed your wife days after she found this.”
Thomas admitted Eleanor threatened to revoke his medical license and report Claire’s undocumented grandmother.
“I thought keeping my career would keep the family safe.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“You kept your title. Mom lost her name.”
Federal agents located Maria in a private Maryland residence. She was alive, conscious and furious that everyone had discussed her capacity without allowing her to speak.
Eleanor called the facility compassionate.
Maria answered, “A locked room does not become kindness because the curtains are expensive.”
She confirmed the black spray was a harmless forensic marker. Eleanor planned to place the same marker inside the vault and claim Claire had touched stolen property.
Then Maria revealed Adrian had visited her three months earlier.
