Chapter 5 - THE SETTLEMENT VICTORIA COULD NOT REFUSE.
Charles Hale arrived from Richmond and insisted the trust had become dormant because no worker trustee had filed annual reports.
Victoria opened her mother’s correspondence file. Maria had mailed every report on time. The bank returned them unopened and later charged the trust penalties for noncompliance.
Charles called it clerical error.
Gloria laid eviction notices across the damaged table.
“Errors that always remove poor families are policies.”
The refinancing funded Ashford luxury developments while retired workers paid rent in houses their deferred wages had bought.
Daniel surrendered his voting rights pending review and asked the council to inspect every document carrying his signature.
Madison accused him of choosing strangers over his future wife.
Daniel replied, “They were strangers only because my family erased their names.”
Then the audit uncovered a settlement paid to Victoria five years earlier. She had accepted two hundred thousand dollars and agreed not to challenge the trust.
Madison’s expression changed.
“So she did want money.”
