Victoria admitted accepting the settlement when Maria needed cancer treatment and the Ashford health plan denied coverage.
Eleanor had offered one choice: sign the silence agreement or watch the hospital discharge her mother.
“I bought her six more months,” Victoria said. “I also gave this family five more years to steal.”
Gloria did not excuse her.
“My husband lost his pension during those years.”
Victoria placed the settlement, with interest, under council control and declined the trustee seat that had belonged to Maria.
“Fear explains my decision. It does not erase its cost.”
Daniel learned the denied medical claim had been reviewed by the Ashford Foundation’s charity board. Madison chaired that board.
Madison said staff prepared the decisions and she approved hundreds at once.
Victoria answered, “Working families must read every hospital line while grieving. Wealthy chairs sign away treatment and call the file too large.”
Then Dr. Chen opened Maria’s old medical appeal.
