Chapter 1 - The Name Inside the Crate

Miguel braked his red-and-white semi when a cream-colored mother dog dragged a wooden crate across the dusty shoulder.
“God… they left you here to die with your babies.”
The dog blocked him, trembling beneath a worn harness. Miguel lowered both hands.
“Easy, Mama. I am not leaving them behind.”
Inside were three living puppies. Beneath the weakest one lay a hospital wristband bearing his missing sister’s name: Lupita Morales.
The dog growled when he spoke it.
Lupita had vanished six months earlier after taking a second job at Vale Ridge Kennels. Police called her a runaway because she cleaned hotel rooms and lacked wealthy friends to demand answers.
“She did not abandon us,” Miguel said. “You people erased her because poor women are easier to blame than rich employers.”
A silver SUV slowed beside the truck. The dog pressed against the crate, terrified.
Miguel’s phone rang.

A man warned, “Leave the dog and keep driving if you want Lupita alive.”
Then Miguel saw the Vale Ridge crest on the SUV door—and the driver was the deputy who closed Lupita’s case.
