Chapter 9 - The Mother They Buried Alive
Teresa appeared at a federal hearing and admitted creating the first transport network decades earlier.
She insisted it began as an escape route. Farmworkers used dog crates, laundry vans and hospital trucks to move mothers away from employers who controlled wages, housing and local police.
The Vales infiltrated the route, replaced rescue papers with adoption contracts and turned protection into profit.
Teresa continued directing shipments after Senator Vale’s father threatened Miguel and Lupita.
She faked her death to keep them outside the network.
Miguel’s pain became fury.
“You saved strangers and let your own children bury you.”
Teresa answered, “I chose thousands of lives and believed you would survive the truth later.”
Lupita’s voice cut through the room.
“That is what powerful people always say after making someone poorer pay for their decision.”
Teresa surrendered the entire route map. Courts reopened coerced adoptions, restored stolen wages and froze Vale assets.
Workers gained control of Mothers First and Vale Ridge.
Then Karen discovered federal funding in every original escape account.
The government had not merely failed to stop the network.
It had financed the destination centers.
The approving signature belonged to Karen’s father, a celebrated federal judge.
