Chapter 10 - The Route Beneath the Government
Karen revealed she had been transferred as an infant through the same system and raised by a judge who later built his career prosecuting “illegal adoptions.”
The government had funded destination centers where rescued mothers were separated from babies under the language of national security and child welfare.
The Vales turned that structure into a private business.
Senator Vale, Celeste, Collins and hospital leaders received federal sentences. Hannah accepted punishment for falsifying records. Teresa testified without demanding forgiveness.
Vale Ridge became a worker-owned animal rescue and legal center. Stolen wages were restored, and every adoption linked to coercion received independent review.
Miguel continued driving emergency supplies across rural routes. Lupita raised her son with support from family, not surveillance. The mother dog recovered, and her three puppies remained together at a farmworker cooperative.
Months later, Miguel returned to the dusty shoulder where he found the crate.
A new wooden box waited beside the road.
Inside were twenty-eight hospital bands and a photograph of Teresa beside a young federal officer.
On the back: THE VALES STOLE THE ROUTE. THE GOVERNMENT BUILT THE DESTINATION.
An identical red-and-white semi approached.
The driver had Lupita’s face.
Miguel called his sister.
