Chapter 8 - The Money That Made Her Look Guilty
Lupita admitted accepting two hundred thousand dollars from Senator Vale.
He believed he was purchasing the red ledger and her silence.
Instead, she copied every bill number and recorded him saying, “No one believes maids when they accuse families like ours.”
Lupita answered, “Then I will make your money testify.”
She used part of the cash to buy medicine and transportation for women escaping the hidden clinic.
Prosecutors still charged her with handling criminal funds and contaminating evidence.
Vale executives negotiated from private offices. Lupita, the hotel cleaner who exposed them, sat in jail without bail.
Miguel faced reporters.
“A wealthy man pays for silence and receives a legal team. A poor woman uses the money to rescue mothers and gets called greedy. That is not equal justice. That is class loyalty wearing a federal badge.”
Public defender Karen Wells released the full recording. Outrage forced an independent inquiry.
Vale, Collins, Celeste and hospital executives were indicted. Lupita’s son returned to her under supervised support, not forced separation.
Then Miguel found the ledger’s missing page sewn inside the puppy blanket.
It named the network’s founder: Teresa Morales.
