Chapter 3 - The Charity That Sold Mothers
Vale Memorial denied admitting Lupita, so hospital janitor Samuel led Miguel and Hannah into a basement archive.
“My wife cleaned here for twenty years,” he said. “They called her family until she asked why poor mothers left without their babies.”
Files showed the Vale charity Mothers First offered prenatal care to low-income workers. The English-only forms secretly surrendered custody rights and employment claims.
Miguel found Lupita’s signature copied from a kennel contract.
“They canceled her insurance, sold her the only help she could afford and called the signature consent.”
Senator Conrad Vale entered with security.
“Your sister voluntarily gave her child a better life.”
Miguel faced him.
“Better means richer to men like you. Lupita cleaned your hospital, yet you decided she was too poor to love her own baby.”
Vale smiled.
“Your family should be grateful.”
Hannah answered, “Gratitude demanded under desperation is obedience, not consent.”
Samuel opened the infant file. The child had never entered adoption care. He remained at the Vale estate, where Celeste presented him as her biological son.
Then a photograph slipped from the folder.
