Chapter 2 - THE VERDICT WRITTEN BEFORE THE FALL.

The petition requested that Sophie be removed from Claire and placed under Margaret’s control.
It described the fall, Claire’s anger and Adrian’s collapse hours before any of it happened.
“You planned the humiliation, then hired a judge to punish my reaction,” Claire said.
Margaret remained calm.
“Women from families like yours confuse emotion with evidence.”
Claire’s mother had cleaned hotel rooms while Claire worked through law school.
“My mother earned every dollar your friends left on stained sheets,” Claire replied. “Your inheritance does not make her labor shameful.”
A family-court judge among the guests tried to leave, but security stopped him.
Sophie whispered that Adrian had promised to send her away if she told Claire about the papers.
The hotel camera showed Margaret rehearsing the fall with Adrian.
