Lauren admitted Margaret promised to erase her debts and give her a place in the family foundation.
She claimed she never believed Adrian would actually trip Sophie.
“You sold a child’s fear because wealthy people offered you a chair near their table,” Claire said.
Lauren’s voice broke.
“I was tired of being the poor sister everyone pitied.”
Sophie stepped behind Claire.
“You were not poor because of me.”
Foundation records showed money donated for foster children had funded Margaret’s ballroom, Adrian’s campaign and Lauren’s apartment.
Workers were ordered to surrender wages to a “family stability fund.”
Margaret called it loyalty.
An elderly server replied, “You threatened our schedules, homes and medical coverage.”
Federal agents froze the accounts.
Then Lauren surrendered a recording.
Adrian said, “Once Sophie is removed, her trust becomes ours.”
Claire stared at the child.
Sophie had no known trust.
