Chapter 4 - THE FATHER THEY ERASED.
Sophie’s biological father was Thomas Reed, a maintenance engineer who organized workers at Margaret’s hotels.
He died in an elevator accident after discovering employee pension money was being moved into private family trusts.
Margaret spoke coldly.
“Thomas was a mechanic with ambitions beyond his station.”
An elderly server answered, “He kept your hotels running while you called him invisible.”
Thomas had left Sophie controlling shares in the worker pension trust.
If Claire married Adrian, those shares would enter the family.
If she resisted, the custody petition would seize them through Sophie.
Claire removed her engagement ring.
“You never wanted a wife. You wanted a signature.”
Adrian insisted his feelings became real.
“Real love does not begin with a plan to steal from a child.”
Investigators reopened Thomas’s death.
The elevator order carried Claire’s signature.
