Claire admitted meeting Adrian during a hotel labor case years earlier.
He offered records if she agreed not to name Margaret publicly.
Claire accepted because she believed the documents might save pensions.
The records were incomplete, and her silence protected the family.
Emily faced her through a secure call.
“You chose a private victory while workers carried the public loss.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
“I thought compromise would protect them.”
A server answered, “Powerful families call it compromise when workers surrender everything.”
Claire withdrew from the case and requested independent counsel.
The court suspended every family member from the pension board.
Workers entered the ballroom and took seats once reserved for donors.
Then investigators found Claire’s genuine signature on an agreement promising her part of Sophie’s trust after marriage.
“I never read that page,” Claire whispered.
