Ethan recognized the authorization.
Margaret had placed it inside a stack of emergency hospital forms while Anna was still alive.
He had signed without reading.
His grief had been real, but so had the privilege that allowed carelessness to harm others.
Lily looked at him.
“Did you help them?”
“I helped by not asking,” he answered. “That is still something I must answer for.”
He surrendered control of the estate to an independent board representing Lily and the employees whose money had been stolen.
Rosa became temporary chair. Staff pensions were restored through the sale of family investments, jewelry and vacation properties.
Claire, Margaret, Nathan and Caroline faced fraud and coercion charges.
At the courthouse, Margaret told Lily she had destroyed her family.
Lily held the floral bag against her chest.
“No. You packed me out of it.”
The mansion became Lily’s protected home, but no wedding replaced the broken one.
That night, Ethan opened the bag’s final hidden pocket.
Inside was a photograph of Anna standing beside Claire years earlier.
Both women were pregnant.
