Chapter 6 - THE GRANDMOTHER WHO PACKED THE BAG.
Margaret insisted she had been protecting the wedding from scandal.
“Families like ours survive because someone makes the difficult decisions.”
Rosa looked at Lily’s shaking hands.
“You always call it difficult when someone poorer pays the price.”
Inside the floral bag were two dresses, a toothbrush, fifty dollars and a bus ticket to Baltimore.
No adult had been arranged to meet Lily.
Margaret claimed a former nanny would have collected her.
The phone number on the ticket belonged to a disconnected line.
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“You sent my five-year-old daughter out of this mansion with fifty dollars and a lie.”
Margaret answered, “She would have been found quickly. The point was to establish that she left voluntarily.”
That sentence destroyed her defense.
The custody transfer required proof that Lily willingly abandoned the residence.
Claire and Margaret had staged the departure to activate it.
Then Ethan found one more object inside the bag: Anna’s old phone.
Its battery still worked.
A scheduled recording began playing.
